At the Lewiston School Committee meeting on Monday, Aug. 22, it was brought to the public’s attention that Bill Webster’s 85-day vacation was not his doing, but rather the School Committee’s offer made to keep him from retiring.

As a citizen and taxpayer, I question why anyone would allow him to take that time in place of retiring? What is there to say he won’t retire like he planned once this vacation is done? Where is the fairness for other administrators affected?

Lewiston officials should not have approved the vacation with no input from the public.

To try and justify their actions, the public was told that Webster would be checking in daily while sailing to the Bahamas. I am no rocket scientist but I know that you don’t get cell phone coverage while in the middle of the ocean, so, unless he has invented a new phone service, I do not see that happening.

I cannot change what the School Board did behind people’s backs, but I feel if they are doing that, then what else are they doing?

The only way for the public to stop their irrational spending and backhanded ways is to elect a whole new school committee at the next election.

Once bitten, twice shy is the saying. I am not waiting for another bite but, rather, I am going to vote for a new individual to represent me come election — hopefully one who will actually listen to his or her constituents.
