MECHANIC FALLS — RSU 16 Adult Education has announced upcoming enrichment classes.
Fitness classes: Zumba, PiYo, dance fitness and yoga. Each are offered in two six-week sessions beginning the week of Sept. 19. Cost is $40 per six-week session.
Business skills: noon to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 21 to Dec. 14. Focus is mainly on Microsoft Office and email. Attendees will create documents appropriate for the workplace. They will create email accounts, learn the basics of sending and receiving messages, and opening and attaching files. Those who are job searching can sharpen their business skills, create or update their resume and work with email. Also discussed will be social media presence. Cost is $75.
Microsoft Applications and Google Docs: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 21 to Dec. 14. Class will cover Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Google equivalent of each. Attendees will create and edit letters and documents, work with spreadsheets and create slideshow presentations for personal and/or business use. Depending on wants/needs of students, class may also work with tables and graphics. Basic computer experience is required. Cost is $75.
Keyboarding/Typing: 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, Sept. 23 to Dec. 16. Attendees can work at their own pace to increase speed and accuracy. Cost is $50.
Computer Basics: 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, Sept. 23 to Dec. 16. This class for beginners will teach attendees how to use a computer and email at their own pace, based on their own needs in an informal setting. Cost is $75.
Office Skills Certificates: The center offers computer certificates in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as keyboarding, internet and email.
Microsoft Office Specialist 2013: The center now offers the MOS certification exam. Cost is $125 and includes preparation and exam. FMI: 207-345-3217.
Gluten-free Basics: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. Michelle Breton will share her years of research, experience and adaptation to help those interested navigate the gluten-free world. Attendees can sample several gluten-free snacks. Cost is $10.
American Mah Jongg: 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, Sept. 23 to Oct. 7. Priscilla St. John will teach the strategic game of American Mah Jongg. Those who enjoy critical thinking games such as cribbage and rummy may find this appealing. Cost is $10.
Baby-sitter Certification: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Michel Vining, AEMT, EMD, I/C, will teaching developmental stages, bottle-feeding, diaper changing, safety, and age-appropriate activities and games. Course includes the BLAST program by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Class also includes certification for American Heart Association Heartsaver pediatric first aid, CPR and AED use for the adult child and infant. First aid topics include prevention, recognition and treatment for medical emergencies and injuries. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Cost is $60.
CPR/AED: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. This American Heart Association instructor-led course will teach adult CPR and AED use. It meets re-certification requirements. Upon successful completion of this course, including a skills test, students will receive a Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card valid for two years. Physical ability to practice and demonstrate chest compression is required. Cost is $75.
Staying Home Alone: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Judy Emch will teach this class designed by an experienced educator and American Red Cross trainer. This class teaches 8- to 11-year-olds the fundamentals of the new experience of staying home alone for short periods of time. Through puzzles, games and activities, students learn what they need to know in case a problem arises, such as parent cellphone numbers, which neighbors can be counted on to help, when to call 911, safe and unsafe “home alone” activities, and what to do if there’s a fire or other emergency. Course includes a take-home booklet for each child to share with parents and a certificate of completion. Cost is $30. FMI: 207-345-3217.
Weather 101: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. WGME meteorologist Adam Epstein will give an overview of Maine’s weather and diverse climate. He’ll give participants basic meteorological tips in order to better understand weather forecasts and broadcast meteorology. Cost is $5.
Freezer Meals: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Ashley Gendron will show participants food preparation, and students will take home five to seven freezer meals. A supply list will be provided after registration. Cost is $10.
Introduction to self-employment: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. Karleen Andrews, New Ventures Maine microenterprise specialist, will help attendees decide if self-employment is right for them. They will learn about entrepreneurship, the pros and cons of owning their own business, ways to manage risk, elements of a business plan, important financial pieces and start-up steps. Class is free, but preregistration is required.
