Oxford Hills AARP to meet

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will meet on Monday, Sept. 12, at the First Congregational Church on East Main Street.

A chicken lunch will be served at noon. Cost of the lunch is $7, and reservations are required by Friday, Sept. 9, by contacting 207-744-9069.

The business meeting will begin at 12:45 p.m. A representative from Androscoggin Home Health will be the guest speaker.

The book and puzzle swap will continue, and the organization will be collecting contributions for the food pantry.

Sale to benefit Books for Bikes

FARMINGTON — Wilton Lodge No. 156 will hold a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday, Sept. 9, 10 and 11, in the parking lot at Hannaford.

Members are looking for donations of good items to sell. Lodge members can pick up items.

The sale will benefit the lodge’s Books for Bikes program, which awards new bikes to boys and girls in each grade at Cushing School and Academy Hill School in the spring. For each book read, students can submit a ticket for the bike drawing.

Addiction recovery program in Jay

JAY — RU Recovery Program, a national faith-based addictions program headquartered in Rockford, Illinois, is starting a chapter in Jay.

New Life Baptist Church will host the program from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 9 at 66 Hyde Road.

The program is open to all adults who struggle with an addiction or a stubborn habit.

Sumner Scholarship Bottle Drive

SUMNER — The Sumner Scholarship Bottle Drive is set for Saturday, Sept. 10. Volunteers will drive around Sumner between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. collecting bottles and cans from residents.

Community members may leave bagged bottles and cans by their mail box for pick up or at the Town Office.

Volunteers are needed to help with the collection.

The scholarships are awarded each year to Sumner residents. Applications are available on the Sumner town website.

Honey Bee Club to meet

PARIS — Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club will hold a workshop at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Road.

Al Borzelli will speak to club members on preparing bees for winter. Weather permitting there will be an open hive, so participants should bring veils.

Texas Hold’em poker tournament

LOCKE MILLS — Jackson-Silver Post 68 will play Texas Hold’em Saturday, Sept. 10, at 595 Gore Road.

Doors will open at noon, and games will begin at 1 p.m.; these times are a change from previous tournaments.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and refreshments will be available. Participants should bring their own beverages.

Public safety at Oxford Rec

OXFORD — Oxford Police Department Sgt. Alan Coffin will present Public Safety Awareness: Don’t Be A Victim from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Oxford Recreation Center, 223 King St.

The presentation is open to all residents of Oxford older than 12, including senior citizens. They will learn ways keep themselves and their families safe through educated awareness.
