100 years ago, 1916
F. G. Davis of Auburn has recently purchased a new Cadillac 8 auto and the machine is attracting considerable attention. It is a 60 horsepower affair and is known as the Victoria type. This is the only machine of its kind in the county and is especially fine in its lines.

50 years ago, 1966
Authorities this weekend continued to maintain a close watch in the area of a Canal Street business establishment where trouble had been reported in recent weeks. Lewiston police, assisted by a vanguard of military police authorities, continued to patrol the area extensively Saturday night and Sunday morning where black servicemen and area youngsters tangled in recent weeks. Police said “everything was quiet” for a Saturday night. There were no disturbances reported, and the gathering of youngsters at the establishment appeared to diminish. Military police patrolled the general area quite extensively, again maintaining constant contact with police headquarters via a walkie-talkie system. One police officer noted that further incidents were not imminent as military personnel were apparently fully aware that they should not stop in the immediate area. “The military officers know how to handle their men,” it was said. Lewiston police, who last week carried their two-foot-long riot sticks, were not so equipped this weekend. The racial rumble took place on several occasions last month as a black serviceman was the subject of name-calling by an area youngster.

25 years ago, 1991
The Poland Fire Department was the overall winner of the 1991 Buckfield Muster Sunday. The Buckfield Fire Department played host to nine teams from six different towns competing in four events. Poland placed first in the dry hose contest. While Buckfield firefighters placed third in that contest, they did not take any prizes Sunday, and the third-place trophy went to Turner firefighters, who placed fourth.
