LIVERMORE — The sixth annual autumn pie and arts benefit Saturday, Sept. 10, at Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will feature Civil War-era fashions.

From 1 to 4 p.m. there will be two fashion shows, a pie sale and tours of the mansions. All proceeds benefit the Norlands educational programs.

Historical clothing from the museum’s extensive costume collection is on display in the 1867 Washburn family mansion. “Under the Dress-Victorian Secrets” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. by Carolyn Lawson, Norlands board president and member of the Third Maine Company A Volunteer Infantry re-enactment group. She will talk about the ideal of beauty in the Civil War era and show how clothing construction and wired undergarments created the distinctive Victorian silhouette.

At 2:30 p.m., “Hats to Hoops: What the Washburn Women Wore” will be presented. Norlands interpreters portray Patty Washburn, her daughter Caroline Washburn Holmes and daughter-in-law, Adele Gratiot. They will share their perspective on the history of their famous family and illustrate the many layers and styles appropriate to their 19th century positions — mother of 10 children, widow, and wife of an international diplomat, respectively.

The 1853 one-room schoolhouse will also be open.

Whole pies will be offered for $12 each while supplies last. Pie slices are served with real whipped cream for a donation.
