POLAND — A large fire broke out in a pile of mulch Sunday afternoon at Oldecastle Lawn and Garden Center.

The call came in at 12:30 p.m. for crews to respond to the scene on Route 122.

Several departments assisted at the scene, including North Yarmouth, Durham, Auburn, Norway, Mechanic Falls, New Gloucester, Turner, Otisfield, Minot, Sabattus, Wales, Greene, Pownal and the Maine Forest Service.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office also assisted along with an emergency helicopter and Poland Spring Bottling Co.

At one point, the smoke was heavy enough to create a cloud.

Crews battled all day to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Sunday night.
