AUBURN — The retail plaza on Center Street that is the future home of Krispy Kreme will be joined by another national food chain.

Firehouse Subs will co-anchor the retail strip with the doughnut and coffee shop chain at 410 Center St., according to Mainebiz. Cricket Wireless is also expected to lease space at the plaza.

Firehouse Subs, based in Jacksonville, Florida, has 1,050 stores, including fast-food restaurants in Topsham and Biddeford. The chain was started in 1994 by two firefighter brothers.

The Krispy Kreme franchise in Auburn will be the chain’s first store in Maine. Based in North Carolina, Krispy Kreme has 1,000 locations nationwide.

Property owner R&D Research plans to invest $3 million in the Center Street property, according to Mainebiz.

The site was the former home of Paris Farmers Union, which moved its store to Lewiston in 2010.

Construction on the new building is expected to be finished before the end of the year.
