MECHANIC FALLS — Fire broke out in an apartment building at 3 Maple St. in downtown Mechanic Falls Saturday afternoon, resulting in one resident being taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

The fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m.

The building at the corner of Maple and South Main streets is the site of a fatal fire about five years ago.

A woman residing in the building was administered oxygen at the scene and was taken to a local hospital, police said. It is unclear how many people were in the building at the time fire broke out.

A small caged pet was also rescued by firefighters, according to police.

Crews from Mechanic Falls, Auburn and Poland responded to the scene where heavy smoke could be seen coming out from the windows and under the roof, which had to be vented. The fire is believed to have broken out in a second-floor kitchen.

A first-floor occupant, a local businessman who declined to give his name, said he was not at home at the time of the fire. It is unclear how many people were in the building at the time of the fire but all residents got out safely, police said.

Traffic on Route 11 (South Main Street) was rerouted down Mitchell Street.
