I appreciated the column by Abdikadir Negeye in the Sun Journal (Sept. 11) in which he wrote about the idea of offering the Somali language at Lewiston High School.
I was an educator for 30 years and, at my high school, students were required to take a minimum of one year of a foreign language. There were many students who had no interest in learning a language with the hopes of being fluent or of visiting French or Spanish countries, or learning Latin derivatives.
It seems to make a lot of sense in the Lewiston community to offer Somali to children. Not only would they have opportunities to use it and be tutored in it, but the process would help bond two cultures.
I hope the Lewiston School Committee will consider that excellent option
