DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have some eyeglasses I would like to donate to the Lions Club. Could you run a list of drop-off sites? Thanks. — Gloria Hall, no town.

ANSWER: If you wear glasses, odds are you have a pair that are no longer being used. Lions Club volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers where volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in low- and middle-income communities. According to the website, you can drop off your usable eyewear at Lions-sponsored collection boxes in your community or send them in by mail.

Sun Spots reached out to the Maine chapter of the Lions Club and, unfortunately, both the Lewiston and Auburn Lions Clubs have disbanded. You can, however, mail the glasses directly to their lab in Waterboro. The mailing address is:

If any readers know of any drop-off sites in Lewiston, Auburn or surrounding towns, please write to Sun Spots.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Families and friends can honor veterans for serving our country by having their names inscribed on our next monument. We are now taking submissions for our 29th monument at the Veterans Memorial Park. This new stone will be unveiled next Memorial Day weekend, Saturday at 10 a.m., with special guest, four-star Gen. William J. Begert, U.S. Air Force, retired. Names of seven members of the Begert family will be inscribed on this stone. Begert is a local veteran who has had an illustrious career in the U.S. Air Force.

If anyone would like to have a friend or member of the family included on this monument, call Normand Cote at (207) 782-1725 or email at [email protected]. You will receive an application via email or regular mail if you do not have a computer. The only conditions are that the veteran has served in any branch of the services, past or present, and is from the state of Maine. A copy of the DD214 or Honorable Discharge document is required. Inscription fee is still $35 per name.

In addition, the LA Veterans Council would like to advise people who use the Veterans Memorial Park to respect the veterans whose names are inscribed on these monuments. Use trash containers and do not leaving trash and cigarette butts all over the area. The city of Lewiston does a great job maintaining the park, but the public should do its part as well in keeping it clean. — Normand Cote, Lewiston.
