100 years ago, 1916
A convention held in Brunswick represented by 75 delegates from all the Textile centers of the State was called for the purpose of discussing the official returns of the referendum on the 54-hour law held Sept. 11 and carried by an overwhelming majority in its favor. It must take affect shortly as ten days are allowed for the governor to issue his proclamation after the referendum vote and thirty after for the law to come in force near the end of October.
50 years ago, 1966
The leveling course of pavement has been installed on all of the streets in Auburn being repaved under the city’s street improvement program, and work is now under way on installing the wearing surface on some of the streets. Roland Saucier, superintendent of the Auburn Highway Department, said the wearing surface has been put in place on Denison Street and a part of Gamage Avenue, and that work on applying the wearing surface on the remainder of the streets in the overall project will continue as weather permits.
25 years ago, 1991
A three-unit condominium project placed on the market last spring by the Auburn Housing Authority is still empty and “suffering from the throes of the economy,” says Executive Director Richard Whiting. Haskell Heights, a Victorian style, three-unit condominium at the top of Goff Hill is on the agency’s Wednesday meeting agenda. “Some people who have the income (to afford the mortgage) don’t have the down payment,” Whiting said. “But for someone remotely in a position to do so, this is a great time to buy with interest rates going down.”
