Spend an afternoon with
Sen. Margaret Chase Smith
BATH — The Chocolate Church Arts Center, in partnership with the Cosmopolitan Club of Bath, will present “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington — An afternoon with Sen. Margaret Chase Smith” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9.
During historical political unrest, U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine was “a woman of many firsts” and a beacon of integrity during a declaration of conscience.
The show will feature a rare performance by Sally Jones, who portrays Smith in this extraordinary one-woman play written by Maine playwright Linda Britt.
In the play, Sen. Smith speaks directly to the audience, telling the story of her private and public life from her early days in Skowhegan to being the only woman elected to both the House and the Senate.
As the only female senator, she courageously challenged Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s in her famous “Declaration of Conscience” speech that is incorporated into the play.
Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door.
