NORWAY — St. Catherine of Sienna Church will hold a Blessing of the Animals at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, according to Dave Guthro, communications director of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
The church is at 32 Paris St. and the service will be in the parking lot.
The Blessing of the Animals is held every October in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, Guthro said.
Prayers will be offered while people’s pets are gently sprinkled with holy water, he said.
“People can bring any animal they’d like, as long as they can control the animal,” Guthro said. “In the past, we’ve seen dogs and cats, of course, but also a variety of birds, goldfish and even goats.”
Other Blessing of the Animals events will be held in Biddeford, Lewiston, Orono, Yarmouth, Portland, Augusta, Westbrook and Orono.
“I just thought it would help people who wanted to attend if we provided a list of all of the different ones happening,” Guthro said. “Attendance is always strong, particularly when it’s a nice day, as all of the blessings are planned for the outdoors.”
