Dance to help ‘Stock The Shelves’

FARMINGTON — “Help Stock The Shelves,” a 1980s-themed rock extravaganza dance, will be from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Oct. 8, at American Legion Post 28.

The FUNdraisers, a special projects division of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, is hosting the dance. All proceeds benefit the Farmington Care and Share Food Pantry and the Wilton Area Food Pantry.

Raffle tickets will be given for each pound of nonperishable food donated. Ticket drawings will be held throughout the evening for products or services donated by local businesses.

DJ Roger Robbins will provide music. There will be a cash bar and food.

West Paris Library book sale 

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library will hold its annual Used Book Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Historical Society building on Main Street across from the library.

A wide selection of books will be available for purchase, including many recent best sellers in hard cover and paperback, books for children and young adults, nonfiction, DVDs and puzzles.

There will be an opportunity to win from a selection of fall raffle prizes. Coffee and muffins will be available.

The remaining books will be sold in a Buck-a-Bag sale 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the society. The raffle winners will be drawn during this sale.

VFW open house in Jay

JAY — There will be an open house/birthday celebration for Betty A. Houle from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Houle, turning 92, has been a member for over 50 years and a volunteer for veterans and at Togus for almost as long.

Animal expert talk at Extension dinner

CHESTERVILLE — University of Maine Cooperative Extension Franklin County Extension Association will hold its annual business meeting and public supper from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Chesterville Town Office, 409 Dutch Gap Road.

Special guest Bernd Heinrich, author of “Winter Survival of the Ruffed Grouse,” will talk about the book and present original watercolors. The professor emeritus of biology at the University of Vermont has authored 20 books about animal behavior, natural history, ecology and evolution.

Cost is $10 for the 6 p.m. public meal. Reservations by Monday, Oct. 10, are required for the supper.
