PORTLAND — Officials say U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin will give away a $2,000 campaign donation he received from Wells Fargo after he condemned the bank last week for allegedly scamming customers.

Poliquin officials confirmed Tuesday that the 2nd District Republican plans to give away the money, but further details have yet to be decided. It’s unclear where the donation will be going.

Poliquin told Wells Fargo Chairman John Stumpf he should be ashamed of himself for the bank’s alleged practice of opening unauthorized accounts to meet sales goals.

Democratic opponent Emily Cain has meanwhile continued her call for Poliquin to return other donations “from shady sources” such as Zoe Cruz or Advance America.

Maine’s GOP chairman says Democrats were wrong to criticize Poliquin and should worry about holding their own candidates accountable.
