100 years ago, 1916
Clan Campbell must soon vacate one of its halls in Day block as it has been included in the lease to the promoters of a Chinese restaurant that is to occupy three floors of the building. The upper hall, however, the Clan’s lease has over two years more to run, so that unless they decide to sell the lease, they will retain the upper hall for some time. The order has occupied the hall for almost 30 years and its members regret they now they must find new quarters.

50 years ago, 1966
A new program aimed at helping under-privileged children in Lewiston-Auburn has recently been initiated, it was announced today by David W. Elz, youth director at the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA. The Big Brother-Big Sister Program is being sponsored by the cooperative efforts of Bates College, the YMCA, and many local agencies. The program pairs college students with youngsters who are socially and economically deprived. The college student becomes the child’s Big Brother or Sister, taking interest and trying to show what possibilities are open for the future. The student will take the Little Brother or Sister to various cultural and athletic activities or local places of interest. Some 20 students from Bates College are participating in the program.

(Photo Caption) Scott Mennealy, an eighth-grade student at St. Joseph’s School in Lewiston, looks over a pie-throwing invention he designed for the school’s Invention Convention last spring. He videotaped his invention in action, with his brother, Brad, on the receiving end, and sent the tape to “America’s Funniest People,” a nationally televised show. His tape was selected and he was Invited to come to Los Angeles to be on the show. The segment will air in late October. He is the son of Stephen and Nancy Mennealy of Lewiston.
