NORWAY — Walkers who are part of the fifth Maine Peace Walk will be greeted at a reception at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the First Universalist Church, 479 Main St.
People in the immediate area and beyond are invited to the event. There will be a potluck supper followed by discussion, songs and chants.
Monks and nuns of the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order will lead the walkers through Maine. That religious group has taken a leading role in walks throughout the world, all dedicated to peace, nuclear disarmament and human rights. In 2010, community members welcomed members of the Buddhist order and the Maine peace walkers to Norway and the Norway Universalist Church.
The walk begins on Indian Island (Penobscot Nation) and ends in Kittery. Walkers arriving in Norway on Oct. 17 will have come from Augusta and will be heading for Lewiston.
Participants in the Peace Walk are peace and environmental activists from Maine and elsewhere. The theme of the walk this year is Stop the War$ on Mother Earth.
The walkers are on the road in order to stimulate thinking and discussion about a common response to wars, environmental degradation and climate change. They want people everywhere to build sustainable lives and communities instead of producing for war.
