HALLOWELL — Harlow Gallery will have an opening reception for its newest exhibit, “Doors: Art & Poetry” from Living in the Community Wellness Center and the Waterville Social Club.
It will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at 160 Water St. The reception will feature a reading from a recently published book of art and poetry by club members.
Community artist Natasha Mayers and poet Lee Sharkey edited and curated the book and the exhibit. The exhibit and related projects have received grants from Maine Community Foundation and the Margaret E . Burnham Charitable Trust.
The artists and poets whose work is represented in the show and book include Debbie Bryand, Ken Bryant, Stephen Carmody, Ruth Cohen, Cheryl Corliss, “Dante,” Cindy Dow, Sheri Haywood, Ron Howard, Frances Jennings, Michael Martin, Daniel Moores, Robert Nutting, Wendell Oakes, Mark Shedd, Ted Silva, Charles Stratton, Kim Thorpe, Pete, Pam, Ken and Anne.
Their candid and original drawings, paintings and poems reflect joy, pain, bemusement, despair, hope, passion and curiosity — the full range of human vision and responses. The works speak from the heart with graphic eloquence and moves visitors to a deeper appreciation of both the uniqueness and the commonality of human experience.
The LINC and Waterville clubs are supported by Motivational Services Inc., a nonprofit mental health organization offering programs to meet the needs of people with severe and prolonged mental illness in Kennebec County. Club offerings include art and writing workshops, recreational and educational activities, cultural events, workshops on daily living skills, crafts projects, opportunities for volunteerism, and participation in the club’s advisory board.
Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The exhibit runs from Oct. 28 to Dec. 23. It’s free and open to the public.
