1929 – 2016

LEWISTON — Claire M. Lagace, 87, of Lewiston passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 18, with her family at her side at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Lewiston on July 27, 1929, a daughter of Maurice and Marie Anne Aubut Malo. Claire graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of ’46, and progressed to the Auburn Maine School of Commerce, where she graduated in 1948. Upon graduation, she was employed in the office of W.S. Libbey Co. for 10 years and then went to work as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business until his retirement.

She had been a lifetime communicant of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish, and was a choir member for more than 61 years, after which she joined the Holy Family Funeral Choir. She had participated in other vocal groups in the area, including being a member of the Foyer Musical Chorale, and many functions were jointly held with the Orpheon Choral Group under the direction of Alexis Cote. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne Sodality, taught religious education, served as a Eucharistic minister, lector and worked in pastoral care, the lay ministry program and other parish functions. A leader of the Paraclete Prayer Group, she had served on the advisory board for the Charismatic Renewal and had organized many days of recollection, retreats and healing services. She was an avid reader and loved the ocean.

Claire was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Lucien “Lou” Lagace of Lewiston; and a sister, Jacqueline, who passed away at a young age.

She is survived by two sons, Paul and wife, Robin, of Wilmington, Mass., and Dan and wife, Elyse, of Voluntown, Conn.; a brother, Louis R. Malo and wife, Lina, of Upper St. Clair, Pa.; two sisters, Claudette and husband, Paul Jalbert, of Lewiston, and Diane S. Williams of Lewiston; a brother-in-law, Rene Lagace and wife, Therese, of Lewiston; a sister-in-law, Irene Lamontagne of Randolph Center, Vt.; and many special and caring nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives, friends and their children.
