100 years ago, 1916
That William F. Carrigan of Lewiston, who as manager of the Boston Red Sox, led that team to world championship honors for two consecutive years and who has now retired from baseball, is to enter the banking business is indicated by reports relating to recent transfers in the First National Bank of Auburn. When it became definitely known that Manager Carrigan was to retire from baseball at the close of the World Series, various reports were heard concerning his business future. It was known that he had valuable real estate holdings in these cities and he admitted that no place looked quite so good to him as Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1966
Auburn Patrolman Clarence D. McIntosh found Monday morning that someone had placed four piles of tacks on the roadway near the Belgrade Shoe Co. on the Old Hotel Road. McIntosh said in his report that he cleaned up the piles of tacks as well as possible. He said it appeared the tacks had been placed on the highway by someone with mischievous intent. The tacks were arranged in four piles along some few feet of the roadway. It did not appear, according to police, that the tacks had been dropped on the highway by accident.

25 years ago, 1991
Speaking in favor of keeping fire towers open, Monmouth Fire Chief Laurence Folsom acknowledges that “planes can work well in unorganized territory where there is no leaf and grass burning (by permit). But,” he continues, “in occupied areas they spot authorized fires” as well. “There’s no way … we can chase every smoke report,” he added. Personnel from local fire departments gathered at a meeting of the Maine Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association on Wednesday in Leeds, where they heard a Maine Forest Service proposal to use aircraft to spot fires instead of the traditional tower system.
