PORTLAND — Several municipalities across Maine have moved to enact moratoriums on marijuana social clubs and retailers in anticipation of the passage of referendum Question 1 on the November ballot.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the ballot measure would legalize the recreational use of marijuana for adults over the age of 21 if it’s ultimately approved.
Without pre-existing rules or zoning ordinances, many cities and towns have introduced certain marijuana-related moratoriums to provide local officials with more time to figure out the specifics.
The town of Gray last week adopted a six-month moratorium to develop regulations on clubs and retail establishments where marijuana can be sold or consumed. The city of Brewer did the same earlier this month.
Officials in Westbrook and Cumberland will discuss enacting similar moratoriums on Monday.
