In his letter to the editor (Oct. 20), William Van Tassel lamented the prospect of either a Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump presidency. Millions feel the same way, including me.

However, there are too many Americans who are just as immoral as they are, Van Tassel contended; too many unwilling to live by the Gospel. If more people did, we might be blessed with a better choice of candidates. (We get the leaders we deserve, in other words.)

Not surprisingly, Van Tassel didn’t draw attention to the uncomfortable fact that there are also way too many Christians unwilling to follow the Gospel to the utmost by, say, freeing the demon-possessed, speaking in tongues, handling deadly serpents and drinking poison without harm, and healing the sick — all supernatural signs their “infallible” Lord is claimed to have said would accompany the true believer (Mark 16:16-18).

If there were more of that spectacular kind of witness in America, presumably there’d be much, much less immorality — yes?

So as to put us on notice we’re living in “the last days,” Van Tassel capped his letter by quoting 2 Timothy 3:1-5; but I’m not alarmed in the least. To me, his warning is just another drop in the crock of end-time warnings that have spanned 20 centuries and have all proved to be bogus.
