DIXFIELD — The Mexico Lions Club will host an event to celebrate its 50th anniversary from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Dixfield American Legion, 8 River Lane.

Lunch will be chicken or pork with fixings and a drink. Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Entertainment is open to the public. Reservations are needed by Oct. 28. For more information, call 207-357-6281.

Club President Roland Patneaude said the 12-member club is in the third year of fundraising for a portable eye screening machine. They want to take the machine into the Regional School Unit 10 schools to do eye screenings for the students to check if they have eye disease or need glasses.

The machine costs $8,000, and the club has raised $2,500. The bulk of the money raised so far has come from the Larry Mercier Ice Fishing Derby, which has been held for 36 years on Roxbury Pond.

Patneaude said there isn’t a portable eye screening machine like this in the area, and he thinks the closest one is in Stratton.

Tax-deductible donations toward this goal will be accepted the evening of the event. Checks can be made out to the Mexico Lions Club, P.O. Box 141, Mexico, ME 04257, or donations accepted by calling 207-562-0949.
