1940 – 2016

AUBURN — Gilles J. Vallieres, 76, of Vallieres Lane, Durham, died peacefully with his wife and siblings at his side on Thursday, Oct. 27,  at Androscoggin Hospice in Auburn after an extended illness.

He was born in Drummonville, P.Q., Canada on Aug. 10, 1940, the son of Royal Vallieres and Juliette (Roy) Vallieres.

Gilles came to the United States at the age of seven. He became a proud citizen, received his GED and attended college. At 16, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and then served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was most proud of his honorable military service, especially his work helping maintain Air Force One.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 153 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 153. He was passionate about his love of fishing, boating and Moosehead Lake. He greatly enjoyed his winters in Florida as well as spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Charlotte M. (Townley) Vallieres of Durham; three daughters, Lesha Beaulieu and husband, Todd Beaulieu, of Durham, Julia Foss and fiancée, Jamie Hutchinson, of New Gloucester, and Rachel Macias and husband, Paul Macias, of Springfield, Va.; two sons, Gilles “Jack” Vallieres Jr. and fiancée, Valarie Banker, of New Gloucester and John Vallieres and wife, Briana Vallieres, of Durham; one stepdaughter, Tammy Smith and significant other, Ricky Crowell, of South Paris; two stepsons, Maurice Smith of Lewiston and Phillip Smith of Rumford; one sister, Mikki Goulet of Lewiston; two brothers: Lucien Vallieres of Lewiston, and Richard Vallieres of Greene; a brother-in-law, Richard Cyr of Florida; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, one great-child on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by parents; one sister, Dot Cyr; one brother and his wife, Charles and Bernice Vallieres; one brother-in-law, Fern Goulet; and one niece, Denise.
