FRYEBURG — Fryeburg Academy football team set the tone and remained in firm control throughout Saturday’s Class C South football quarterfinal.

Cody Gullikson ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Oscar Saunders threw for another score as No. 3 Fryeburg earned a convincing 28-0 win over No. 6 Mountain Valley.

Fryeburg served notice on the first series that it meant business by driving 68 yards, capped by Jared Chisari (110 yards, 21 carries) following the right side of the line for a 5-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead..

“The team was very excited all week. In fact, I’d call it gritty,” Fryeburg head coach David Turner said “They were anxious for the opportunity to play against Mountain Valley, with all its history.”

Saunders threw to Caleb Ekand for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

“We had planned to throw more. But after establishing line of scrimmage, we stayed with it,” Saunders said.

Fryeburg assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Rick White, a longtime member of the Falcons’ coaching staff, and had the calls down pat, as the Raiders forced Mountain Valley (4-5) to punt on its first three possessions.

“You can’t allow a good team to go up 14-zip and expect good things to happen,” Mountain Valley coach Pat Mooney said. “We weren’t awake in the first quarter, and it cost us. We can’t be pleased with the way we played.”

Mooney admitted there is an element of the “student vs. teacher” theme because three members of the Falcons’ current coaching staff played under White at Mountain Valley.

The Falcons gained 80 yards on 26 carries in the first half. Kyle Farrar (92 yards, 17 carries) intercepted a pass, broke three tackles and returned it into the red zone. But, on fourth down, Nick Newman was intercepted by Caleb Bowes in the end zone.

Fryeburg (7-3) advances to the semifinals against Wells.
