1937 – 2016

AUBURN — Eugene “Gene” Tardif, 79, of Lewiston died Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin, following a brief illness.

He was born in Lewiston on Jan. 15, 1937, the son of the late Leonidas and Aldenard (Vallee) Tardif and had been a resident of this community all of his life. He was educated in Lewiston schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He owned and operated Top Hat Café on Lisbon Street in Lewiston for many years. He then was employed as a custodian in the Lewiston school system until his retirement.

He had been very active and was president of the MSEA SEIU 1989 Local 5 Chapter, president of the Webber Avenue Club in Lewiston and a parishioner of Holy Cross Church.

Gene was an award-winning bowler. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing softball, going out for coffee with the boys and most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Aline M. Tardif whom he married on June 3, 1967, of Lewiston; one son, Jeffrey Tardif and his wife, Snow, of Lewiston; two daughters, Bonnie Deschaine and her husband, Paul, of Lewiston and Sharon Spangler and her husband, Earon, of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Nathan Deschaine and his wife, Emily, Merissa Smith and her husband, Jeremy, Micah, Rachel and Mathias Spangler and Evan and Adam Tardif; two great-grandchildren, David and Annabelle Smith; four sisters, Lucille Dutil of Lewiston, Theresa Cloutier of Lewiston, Bernadette Thibeault of New Hampshire and Rachel Cyr and her husband, Leo, of Lewiston; one sister-in-law, Arlene Tardif of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Val Tardif.
