PERU — Citizens have voted not to recall two members of their Board of Selectmen, according to Town Clerk Vera Parent.
Voters said no at the polls Friday to removing Chairwoman Wendy Henderson and Vice Chairman John Witherell from office. Two petitions presented to the board Oct. 6 claimed Henderson and Witherell had failed to represent the will of the town and to vote accordingly. The petitions were certified by the town clerk Oct. 10.
Parent said the request to remove Henderson failed 100-149; the article to removed Witherell failed 102-146.
At a board meeting Oct. 17, amid questions about the legality of both recall petitions, attorney Amanda Meader of Skelton, Taintor and Abbott of Auburn said the petition signatures were valid and the process was legal.
“We never recommend towns adopt recall petitions because they’re ugly, and they’re mean, and they come to no good, but here we are because your town did this, and there’s no way out of it,” Meader said.
