1935 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — Warren Carl Hazelton, M.D., 81, of Norway, most recently residing at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, surrounded by loving family.
He was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Sumner to Eugene Hazelton and Marion Stevens Hazelton.
He went into the U. S. Army after high school and it was there that he met his sweet Marie. Together they raised a family of nine children and last year celebrated 60 years of marriage.
As active community members they helped to open Stephens Memorial Hospital where over the years he delivered nearly 6,000 babies.
He served in the past as president of the school board for Oxford Hills.
He and members of his church family built the Church of Christ building on Paris Hill Road with their own hands. There, they were able to worship God for 40 years. He had a great love of God and wanted all to know Christ and the peace that is possible through surrendering your life to God’s will.
He also loved to sing. His voice was as smooth as silk and as comforting as a warm hug. He performed in numerous community Broadway musicals and Christmas for Teens concerts. He will always be remembered in that community of people as the “King of Siam.”
His other passion was for gardening. He was truly happy when his hands were in the dirt. He was an artist with flowers, hybridizing many beautiful new irises and naming them after his grandchildren and other people whom he loved.
He grew up with family all around, which provided him many opportunities for practical jokes and silly shenanigans. It also provided him with a constant flow of love. Family was always the most important priority in his life. However, his idea of family was never limited by blood relation.
People he cared for or worked with in his medical practice were family. People he performed with in concerts and plays were his family. He loved all. If you knew Warren, rest assured, he loved you and you truly mattered to him.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley Norton of South Paris; seven children, Warren, Beth Guion and her husband, Art, Lisa Lovery and her husband, Terrance, David and his wife, Sandy, Julie Baither, Morgan and her companion, Greg Demnicki, and Megan and her companion, Joshua Shreve; 24 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two daughters, Cyndi and Donita; as well as his sweet Marie just three months ago.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris for the love, respect and genuine care given to Warren over the past three years, as well as the staff of Beacon Hospice. Online condolences may be shared with his family at www.chandlerfunerals.com.
