1932 – 2016

LEWISTON — Robert R. Rich Jr., 84, a resident of Schooner Estates, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was born Aug. 21, 1932, in Newport, the son of Robert R. Rich Sr. and Emily (Palmer) Rich. Robert was a graduate of Newport High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Monterey from Jan. 23, 1952, through Dec. 7, 1955, during the Korean War. On April 19, 1952, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, while home after boot camp, he married his sweetheart, Armance Turmel of Jay.

Following their wedding, they returned to Pensacola, Fla., as husband and wife. After his military service, Robert went to work for RCA in Lewiston, transferred to Wisconsin, California and North Carolina before becoming a maintenance supervisor for the company in Lewiston. Later when the building in Lewiston was purchased by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, he was asked to remain as its building supervisor. He worked for them in Portsmouth, N.H., Fresno, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Calif. He continued working for Liberty Mutual until his retirement.

He was a lifetime member of the Lisbon American Legion Post No. 158 where he served as Commander, and served as Maine State Commander from 1975 to 1976.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Armance Rich of Auburn; his six children, Susan Gaworski and her husband, Jim, of New Gloucester, Robert Rich III of Houston, Texas, Rose Hill and her husband, Robert, of Norfolk, Va., Arnold Rich of Mechanicville, N.Y., Norma Wells and her husband, Ken, of Lisbon Falls, and Dolores Davies and her husband, Michael, of Verona, Wisc.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his three siblings, Marilyn Cacchioli of Moriarty, N.M., Jean Partridge of Livermore Falls, and Harry Rich and his wife, Darlene, of Atlanta, Ga.
