LEWISTON — Nina Davenport’s dominating all-around performance led the Bates College women’s basketball team to a 60-57 victory over the University of New England at Alumni Gymnasium on Monday night.

Davenport put up game-highs in points (22), rebounds (13) and assists (four) in the Bobcats’ nonconference win over the Nor’easters. Bernadette Connors contributed 14 more points by sinking 5 of 6 shorts from the field, including all three of her 3-point attempts.

Bates (2-1) took an early 5-4 lead on a layup by Allie Coppola and never trailed again. New England hung tough, though, and allowed the Bobcats’ lead to exceed eight points.

The game went down to the wire. Bates turned the ball over three times in the final 48 seconds, and UNE cut its deficit to two points before Coppola made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 60-57 with 4.4 seconds remaining. The Nor’easters had one more shot, but were unable to get off a shot.

Alicia Brown led UNE with 14 points and six rebounds.

Bates next plays at Husson in another nonconference tilt Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Bates 71, New England 68

BIDDEFORD — Marcus Delpeche sunk a pair of late free throws to turn a one-point deficit into a one-point advantage, and Bates held on from there for a 71-68 men’s basketball victory over the University of New England.

Trailing by one with 90 seconds remaining in Monday’s game, the Bobcats fed Delpeche in the post and the big man from Wilmington, Delaware, drew a foul to set up the go-ahead free throws.

Delpeche posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. His brother, Malcom, finished with 12 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Max Hummel paced the Bobcats’ offense with a career-high 22 points.

Bates (3-1) was money at the line, making 22 of 28 free throws. UNE made nine of 12.

Bates visits Babson on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
