Hope for the Holidays shopping

LEWISTON — The Hope House’s Family Support Center at 91 College St. is offering three free shopping days this year as part of its Hope for the Holidays outreach program.

Doors will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and 14. Parents will be able to select new and gently used toys, decorations and clothing, and take home a box of food.

A new feature of this year’s outreach is a whole section of books and toys appropriate for special-needs children, especially those on the autism spectrum. There will be plenty of toys for children of all ages.

Parents can wait their turn to shop inside the center’s LA Café, and have coffee and snacks. 

This year’s theme is Share Hope.

Ski team bottle drive

TURNER — Leavitt Area High School’s Nordic and alpine skiers will hold their Thanksgiving bottle and can drive on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Pick-up will begin at 8 a.m.

Every donor of bottles or cans will be entered into a raffle for a night at the Inn by the River in West Forks on the Kennebec River.

Every cash donor will be entered into a raffle for two tickets to a Boston Celtics game, two tickets to a Boston Bruins game, and two tickets to a Boston Red Sox game.

WLU to host Santa Tea

AUBURN — Woman’s Literary Union will hold it’s first ever Santa Tea Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5.

This event will be similar to WLU’s spring Doll Tea and will feature a visit from Santa at each of the 90-minute sessions at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Foss Mansion on Elm Street.

Children, parents, grandparents and friends will share in games, storytelling, refreshments and door prizes. The cost per person is $10.

Art Club to feature Haley

AUBURN — The Auburn Art Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church on Park Avenue.

The program will feature well-known pianist, vocalist and entertainer Kathy Haley. She will be joined by singers Annette Dorey, Rosalie Fredericks and Alda Reynolds in a new quartet, Four Old Broads.

The group will begin the Christmas holiday season with musical carols sung in Barbershop Harmony fashion. Haley will lead the members in a Christmas carol sing-along.

Hostesses for this meeting are Bonnie Ross, Shirley Bennett, Debby Dwyer, Mona Ervin, Alda Reynolds and Elaine Sylvester.

Cub Scouts collecting Toys for Tots

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Cub Scouts, Pack 116, will collect toy donations of new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the cafeteria of Holy Cross Church on Lisbon Street.

Families are welcome to bring young children along to make a holiday ornament. Boys from kindergarten through grade three may learn about Boy Scouts from adult leaders.

Registration open for Colorguard

TURNER — School Administrative District 52 of Turner, Leeds and Greene is taking student applications who are interested in joining the Colorguard.

No experience or equipment is necessary to join this activity, which is being offered to students in grades three through eight. Colorguard members will learn flag techniques, dance movement and will have the opportunity to perform in public.

The group will meet weekly on Tuesdays, from Dec. 6 through April 11, 2017.

There will be an informational meeting and demonstration from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, for students interested in joining.

AUBURN — The High Street Food Pantry is seeking donations of children’s books for infants through teens.
