NORWAY — Phase I of Witt’s End Trail was successfully completed Nov. 23 by the Western Foothills Land Trust.
The 2.5-mile mountain bike, hiking, snowshoeing and Nordic ski trail was supported by private donations and a $34,000 grant from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Conservation.
It runs from Crockett Ridge Road to Pleasant Street near the Witt Swamp and has a 110-foot elevated walkway and bridge, along with a 3-foot-wide machined bed that’s banked for mountain bikes.
Though it’s not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, it’s suitable for children’s carriages. The trail meanders along and through stone walls and a series of woodland habitats.
To keep on schedule, land trust volunteers kept pace through the fall by clearing and swamping the corridor in front of the excavator and mulching the corridor behind.
Those who wish to experience the new trail can either park at Shepard’s Farm Preserve, 121 Crockett Ridge Road, or parallel park at the Pleasant Street trailhead, about 1.5 miles north of Main Street.
