PORTLAND — A judge says a Maine landlord who owned a building were six people died in a fire will serve 90 days in jail.

Gregory Nisbet was sentenced for a code violation Thursday. Prosecutors described rooms in a Portland house he rented as “death traps” during his trial.

Nisbet addressed the court Thursday to say he “had built a bond” with the tenants and mourns their deaths.

The judge found Nisbet not guilty of manslaughter charges, and acquitted him of other lesser charges. His code violation conviction related to the home not having adequate means of escape from third-floor rooms.

Nisbet also was fined $1,000.

The fire happened after a Halloween party in 2014. It was determined to be accidental, blamed on improperly discarded smoking materials on a porch.
