JAY — A Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Jay POW/MIA Remembrance Bridge.
Members of Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335, Lane-Dube AMVETS Post 33 and George Bunten American Legion Post 10 will participate. Auxiliary and AMVETS Sons members will also take part in the service honoring those who were attacked at the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Seventy-five years have passed since the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked. Naval and air forces began the attack at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time (12:48 p.m. Eastern Standard Time). More than 350 planes were launched from six aircraft carriers in two waves.
All eight U.S. battleships and many other vessels were sunk or damaged, as well as 347 aircraft. A total of 2,403 Americans were killed in the early-morning attack by the Japanese Imperial Navy, and 1,178 Americans were wounded.
“We must remember those who have gone before us and those who are struggling even today with the wounds and memories of that time so many years ago,” said Don Simoneau, past state commander of the American Legion.
A color guard will march to the center of the bridge for a wreath-laying ceremony. The AMVETS will provide an honor squad and taps will be played.
