Telephone calls placed by New England Telephone customers in Sabattus will soon be processed at the speed of light using a new computerized call-switching system that the company will activate next Friday. “This sophisticated system will handle more than 11,600 daily calls made by customers whose phone numbers begin with 375. In addition, special software will make new optional custom calling services available to those residents,” said Peter Kovach, NET public relations manager. The new system uses the latest technology available to transport voice, video and data to their destinations at high speeds. The multimillion-dollar call-switching system will use digital fiber optic technology to process calls. “With fiber optics the electrical telephone signal is converted into laser light pulses and sent at the speed of light over thin glass fibers,” Kovach said.
