During the summer, Mt. Abram faced a few undermanned teams and essentially said, “We got this.”

Of course, it wasn’t that easy, and third-year coach Larry Donald said the Roadrunners aren’t the type of team that can afford to have that perspective.

“There isn’t anybody that we’re going to just go in a walk over,” Donald said. “We’re going to have to fight for everything.”

Mt. Abram, however, is a type of team that can fight for a postseason berth.

The Roadrunners lost one player to graduation at return seven players who were part of the core of last season’s 5-13 team.

The key to improving that record and reaching the Class C South playoffs will be staying out of foul trouble — specifically, Donald said, no reaching — and staying healthy. Seven is a nice number of returning starters, but beyond them is a few players with potential but no varsity experience.

Of the returners, junior Meg Sorel and sophomore Summer Ross will key cogs offensively, as will speedy point guard Lindsay Huff.

The 2015-16 Roadrunners won three more games than their predecessors, and Donald said this year’s team is capable of a similar improvement, if they stay healthy, avoid foul trouble, and “keep working like they have been.”
