FARMINGTON — The Police Department is warning local residents of a new email scam.

A Farmington resident brought to police three emails stating that his Mastercard or Visa was going to be charged a large amount “momentarily.” The email instructs the recipient to open an attachment for more details and provides a password for the attachment.

Police said the resident did not open the attachments and deleted the emails.

Police suspect the attachment contained some type of malware that infects the recipient’s computer when opened.
