1918 – 2016

LEWISTON — Esther E. Allen, 98, of Hebron passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Montello Manor.

She was born in South Portland on Oct. 11, 1918, the daughter of Roy M. and Lillian C. Jose Strout. She graduated from high school in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1936 and Bates College in Lewiston in 1940, with a degree in sociology. She later attended the University of Chicago and completed a master’s degree in social work from Boston University in 1945.

She married W. Henry Allen in 1954. She worked as a social worker for the American Red Cross, Tri-County Mental Health and SAD 17 as a home/school counselor. She was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association, the Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn and the United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.

She is survived by her children, Robert and Hope Allen of Naples, Fla., Sandra and Evaristo Vasquez of San Antonio, Texas, Louise Kennedy and David Hackett of Merrimack, N.H., Brian and Joanne Allen of Turner, Bonnie and Jon Rotenberg of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Deborah and Kevin Alden of Leeds; grandchildren, Kristen Freeman Alpert, Kim Freeman Powers, Jim Freeman, Peter Freeman, Jill Freeman Kirk, Caroline Freeman Engvall, Robert Allen, Janet Allen LaRochelle, David Allen, Michael Vasquez, Diana Vasquez Leary, Kathleen Hackett, Timothy Hackett, Stephanie Allen, Jennifer Allen, Christopher Allen, Travis Allen, Faye Rotenberg, Lee Rotenberg, Craig LaPlante and Kevin LaPlante; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Lt. Everett Kennedy who died in World War II in 1944; and her second husband, W. Henry Allen in 1994; a daughter, Patricia Allen Renaghan; and a brother, David Strout.
