PORTLAND (WGME) — The holiday travel rush is underway.

AAA says more than 100 million Americans will fly, or drive, starting Thursday.

With Christmas falling on a weekend this year, that will likely decrease the odds of finding a seat while you wait at your gate.

Thunderstorms will roll through the center of the country, while a wintry mix is expected in Wisconsin this weekend.

Friday will remain mostly clear in Maine but the clouds will quickly move in early Saturday. There will be a rain/snow mix moving in Saturday morning, this will mainly be rain along the coast and light snow inland. The rain and snow will exit the area by late Saturday afternoon and more clearing will take place overnight. Sunday will remain mostly sunny and still mild. The clouds return Monday along with a wintry mix late in the day.

Winter weather could cause travels troubles, especially for those looking to fly this weekend.

There are some ways to make travel easier, though.

It starts right at the TSA line.

Most of the suitcases probably have some holiday gifts, but if they’re wrapped, then they might not be for long.
That’s because the TSA won’t be able to see what you’ve got inside.

Meaning they’ll have to open your bag up, unwrap it, and make sure it’s safe for flight.

What gifts can fly?

Your maple syrups, jams, and jellies are OK, as long as they’re three ounces or less.
Check your bag if you don’t want to lose them.

With that snowfall coming in, and longer holiday lines, TSA agents say the way you pack could decide when you’re able to leave.
