SABATTUS — Police said a vehicle crash that killed a Lewiston driver on Sabattus Road on Monday is still under investigation.
Police Chief Gary Baillargeon said Tuesday that the family of Rebecca Stewart, 28, of Sabattus and her passenger, a 5-year-old child, requested that their medical information not be released. Both were hospitalized following the accident at about 3 p.m. near 667 Sabattus Road.
WGME spoke to Danielle Osgood, a witness to the crash, which happened near her home.
“It was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever seen,” Osgood said. “I feel so bad for all those involved.”
Osgood told WGME that she heard the crash and ran out to the box truck, where she found driver Zachary Gibbens, 46, of Lewiston, who was alive at the time.
“Being CPR certified, I ran down there and tried to help out as much as I could,” Osgood said. “But sadly, it wasn’t enough.”
Gibbens died at the scene.
She also helped Stewart and the child trapped in their van. Osgood told WGME that she and another witness pulled the child out and helped Stewart keep warm.
The cause of the accident is still being determined.
