The Maine Legislature is starting its law-making process.
Does the Sun Journal have the courage to print the votes of the area’s legislators on the most important issues before the Legislature? Constituents should be informed on how their elected representatives and senators are representing them. Who better to do this, and has the obligation to do this, than the major newspaper in the area?
Major issues, such as being forced to join a union in order to work for a company, showing a photo ID to prove citizenship in order to receive a ballot, structuring expenses for education, care of the mentally ill, legislative term limits, qualifications for Medicaid and taxation are items in that category.
When referendum questions are on the ballot, voters see only the summary statement to be for or against. The Sun Journal should print all of the proposed law language that is behind each referendum question. Voters can be misled if only the language on the ballot is known.
The Sun Journal should make sure that its readers are fully informed.
