FRYEBURG — The “Met Opera Live in HD” series presents a new production of Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. The adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic love story stars Diana Damrau in her role debut as Juliette, opposite Vittorio Grigolo as Romeo.

When Damrau and Grigolo starred opposite each other in “Manon” at the Met in 2015, the New York Times said, “The temperature rises to nearly boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together.” The production, by director Bartlett Sher, has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs as Salzburg and La Scala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the sumptuous score. White Mountain Cider Company will be serving lunch in the lobby starting at noon.

Joe De Vito will be hosting his Opera Lecture Series on Thursday, Jan. 19,  at 3 p.m.The Opera Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public, provides an in-depth look at the upcoming Live in HD simulcast.
