A much talked about subject in Auburn is the proposed new charter for the city. The committee, which is giving its careful attention to the matter, is desirous that there be more talk. They want the opinion of the citizens. They want them to talk privately and publicly upon the matter. They want to get at the real opinion of the people, relative to this new movement. Those in touch with the situation believe that Auburn must be educated by some better form of government. A number of forms are being considered. While wedded to no form, many people believe that the business manager form is one of the best.
50 years ago, 1967
Lewiston’s Board of Education voted Thursday night to boost the 25-cent charge for the hot lunch program in city schools to 30 cents. The vote was unanimous. Schools Supt. J. Weldon Russell explained following the meeting that from September to the Christmas holiday, during the first half of the academic year, the school department lost $3,600. “We can’t afford to continue going in the red.”

Tax incentives and Medicaid reform are among the options Congress should consider to make health care more affordable and accessible, U.S. Rep. Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, told St. Mary’s Regional Hospital Auxiliary members Friday. She was careful not to endorse one, overall solution and said she hoped Congress would put aside “partisan bickering” to concentrate on health care and economic improvements when it returns to session next week. Snowe also told the audience of more than 50 that she would support Congress passing an “economic stimulus plan” immediately.
