A half-dozen residents of West Auburn whose mailboxes were damaged last fall in what appeared to be a series of post-Halloween pranks got a pleasant surprise today when they were repaid for the damage done. Auburn Police Capt. Leslie F. Stewart personally visited each of the six homes involved and paid for the damage done to the mailboxes. The total cost was $28. Capt. Stewart said that the money was paid by a 17-year-old Auburn youth who admitted damaging the mailboxes during a recent interview at police headquarters. The APD captain told the Journal he offered the youth a choice — pay for the damage or face charges of malicious mischief in Lewiston’s Eighth District Court. He paid.

An alert neighbor resulted in a youth being apprehended by police Saturday night after she spotted what appeared to be a suspicious vehicle at a Route 9 residence in Sabattus. Police believe a second youth was involved. Corporal Gerry Nadeau, the responding officer, arrived to find a burglary in progress. Nadeau chased one of the suspects on foot in a wooded area for more than a mile. Nadeau said he lost track of the individual in the darkness. With the help of the Androscoggin County Sheriffs Department, the Lisbon Police Department and other Sabattus officers, the suspect was in custody by 3 a.m. Sunday. As a result of the foot chase, the 17-year-old received lacerations to the face, chest and legs and possible frost-bite to his feet, police said. The other juvenile involved in the burglary has not yet been located.
