AUGUSTA — Rick Bennett is stepping down as the chairman of the Maine GOP and mulling a run for governor or other office.

The Republican Party on Saturday selected Saco dentist Demi Kouzounas as the new chair.

Kouzounas had served as the party’s vice-chair and is a former president of the Maine Dental Association.

Bennett said he’s pleased with the results of the last several election cycles in Maine, with Republicans making state history by retaining legislation control of the Senate, re-electing GOP U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin and sending an electoral vote to Republican President Donald Trump thanks to voters in Maine’s second congressional district.

Bennett said Republicans have had success because they focus on issues real people care about.
