RUMFORD — Mountain Valley has been on a roll, and it continued Wednesday night in its girls’ basketball regular-season finale against rival Dirigo.
The Falcons were led by seniors Ashley Russell and Liza White, who scored 19 and 12 points, respectively, as Mountain Valley pulled together once again for a season sweep with a 59-26 triumph against Dirigo.
Mountain Valley also beat the rival Cougars 74-27 last month in Dixfield. The Falcons shot the lights out, connecting on 10 3-pointers.
Mountain Valley (16-2), ranked No.2 in Class B South, defeated Madison on Monday night. That win avenged a loss to the Bulldogs in December.
The Falcons have developed a trademark of starting out fast, and Wednesday was no exception, as they utilized their trapping defense to disrupt Dirgo’s attempt to bring the ball upcourt.
Offensively, Mountain Valley found its offense being dared to shoot from outside against Dirigo’s zone defense. This became quite evident when Russell drained a trey and Emily Billings scored at the buzzer for a 12-4 lead after the first quarter.
Dirigo stayed within striking distance behind free throws by Varnum (11 points) and Olivia Noyes (nine points), to trail 21-14 at halftime.
Mountain Valley pulled away by scoring 18 of the first 20 points in the third quarter. Russell scored two baskets, Abby Mazza scored and White made a 3-point play. Emily Laubauskas grabbed seven rebounds and three steals.
Dirigo, which concludes its season at 4-14, was never able to get a consistent attack going. With just two senior starters, Olivia Noyes and Kaicey Conant, the future looks bright for the youthful Cougars.
“We were fortunate to be as close as we were. We didn’t handle the pressure very well,” Dirigo coach Rebecca Fletcher said.
