Klara Tammany’s guest column (Feb. 5) regarding the U.S. was right on target. I share her sentiments and believe that many other people also do.

Some of us had the good fortune to be raised by parents who took their parental responsibilities very seriously. Those parents taught their children to respect others, to love and help people who are different, without prejudice. Those children taught their children those lessons and so on to other generations.

For those people who did not have the opportunity to be taught those lessons, through no fault of their own, there are other people who can give those without the lessons a chance at a better life through learning.

It is my belief that all people are born as innocent human beings to be nurtured, cared for, guided and loved by the parents who conceived them and gave birth to them. Unfortunately, too many people have not had that opportunity.

All children are born with the same needs, regardless of color, national origin or other factors they have no control over. Many grow up believing that what they learn from their parents is normal behavior.

Lewiston is fortunate to have resources such as The Center for Wisdom’s Women, the Nutrition Center, Seniors Plus, AA meetings, a police department, public schools and many others where the differences between people are embraced, and there is help for the less fortunate and people in need of assistance.
