American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program
WATERVILLE — The American Legion has announced the winner of the High School Oratorical Scholarship Program held Feb. 11 at Thomas College.
Marina Long of North Waterboro placed first with her speech on the U.S. Constitution.
Since 1938, The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program has encouraged the nation’s high school students to study the U.S. Constitution and to hone their public speaking skills.
Each contestant delivered a prepared oration as well as an oration on a randomly assigned constitutional topic.
Long is a freshman at Sanford Christian Academy, representing District 1 at the 2017 State American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Rumford Hospital Super Shoes fundraiser
RUMFORD — Rumford Hospital will host a Super Shoes fundraiser Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23 and 24. It is open to the public.
The sale in Conference Room A downstairs by the cafeteria will feature a selection of brands, styles and sizes of shoes, boots, accessories, handbags, work wear and nursing apparel.
The hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
A percentage of sales will benefit the Support Staff Education Fund, which provides financial help to Central Maine Healthcare employees, including Rumford Hospital staff, in non-clinical positions. The fund is supported by donations and internal fundraising events.

Library to host snowman party
JAY — The Jay-Niles Memorial Library Friends will host a snowman party with stories, crafts, games and refreshments with a snowman theme.
The party will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Jay-Niles Memorial Library, upstairs in Memorial Hall. There is no cost to attend.

Norway Legion hosting karaoke
NORWAY — Post 82, American Legion, will host a karaoke event from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.
Admission is $6 per person. Those attending may bring their own beverage.
Star Teachings of TEA
SUMNER — The Circle of Kindness of Sumner, a community gathering of Star Teachings of TEA dedicated to practicing kindness, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Two Spirits Center, 1122 Main St., Route 219.
The gathering is in circle format where everyone is invited to share their stories, wisdom and questions in the space of openness and receiving.
Cabin Fever Reliever Chinese auction
FARMINGTON — Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association Inc. will host the Cabin Fever Reliever with a Chinese auction Sunday, Feb. 26, at Fairbanks School, 508 Fairbanks Road.
Bidding will start at noon, and the drawing will be held at 1 p.m. Winners must be present to win. More than 100 items will be up for auction.
Tickets cost $1 for five, and those who purchase 25 tickets will get five free. There will be a door prize and refreshments. Proceeds will benefit the Fairbanks School’s maintenance fund.
The association is accepting donations for the auction.
