WEST PARIS — Townspeople will vote at the annual town meeting on whether to adopt an ordinance prohibiting retail marijuana establishments and social clubs.

The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m. at the Agnes L. Gray School gymnasium.

The article asks whether residents wish to adopt an ordinance prohibiting retail marijuana establishments including stores, cultivation facilities, manufacturing facilities, testing facilities and social clubs.

Town Manager Wade Rainey said the prohibition would not affect the legality of people smoking marijuana in their homes.

“We can’t touch that,” Rainey said. “This is only covering retail marijuana.”

Rainey said residents will also vote on whether to repeal the dog ordinance, which was originally adopted in 1969 and amended in 1981, and replace it with a new law.

“We were going through some of our ordinances, and we noticed that our dog ordinance was from 1969,” he said. “Looking through it, we saw that the wording needed some work, as it was out of date.”

The new ordinance is drafted from those in other towns, Rainey said.

Voters also will elect a selectman to a three-year term, a SAD 17 director for a two-year term, and a Water District trustee for a three-year term.

Rainey said nominations will be taken from the floor at the town meeting, so there are no official candidates.
