RICHMOND, Maine (AP) — Police say a man was shot while trying to break through a front door of a neighbor’s apartment in Richmond, Maine.

Police Chief Scott MacMaster says the victim, 42-year-old Shad Hembree, was wrestled out of the apartment and then shot when he broke the glass on the French-style door to regain entry.

MacMaster said the injured Hembree then smashed the windows of the victim’s vehicle before being taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with non-life-threatening injuries.

The chief identified the gunman as 28-year-old Trevor Whitney, a military veteran. The chief said Whitney was not charged because he fired in self-defense.
